About Shafer Trail Road 

Shafer Trail, or Shafer Road as it’s also known, carves a path through some of the most striking terrain in the American Southwest. Located in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, the winding and unpaved road descends 1,500 feet through a massive sandstone cliff and is part of the 100-mile White Rim Road. The road’s history is rich: It began as a path made by Native Americans to access resources on the mesa top; then became a trail for sheep herders moving flocks to better foraging areas in the winter; and then became a road for trucks moving loads of uranium from the backcountry to market. Today, it is a challenging backcountry road for recreational users seeking the experience of a lifetime.

Stretching over 19 miles, this spectacular scenic route typically takes about an hour. Its numerous tight switchbacks descend into the canyon, offering drivers both a challenge and a thrill. A high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended to navigate this road safely. It’s important to note that ATVs, OHVs, or UTVs are not permitted inside the park.  

Shafer Canyon Overlook 

Just past the Visitor Center is a short 0.3-mile trail leading to panoramic views across the vast canyon. The overlook presents a photo-worthy spectacle, revealing layers of geological history painted in reds, oranges, and browns. 

Photography 

With its expansive vistas and dramatic lighting, the trail and overlook are a magnet for photographers. The Shafer Trail viewpoint is particularly popular at sunrise and sunset when the canyon glows with fiery hues.  

Exploring the Moab Potash Mine 

Near the trail’s beginning, the Moab Potash Mine offers a glimpse into the area’s industrial activity. While the mine is not open to the public, there are vantage points along Potash Road Moab where visitors can observe the bright-blue evaporation ponds, which contrast strikingly with the natural landscape.

• Accessing the Trail: Shafer Trail is accessible from Potash Road (Utah 279) just north of Moab or via the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park. The trail itself is free to drive, but park entrance fees apply if entering or exiting through Canyonlands. 
• Vehicles: High-clearance 4WD vehicles with low-range gear (4LO) are highly recommended.  
• Weather: Backcountry driving conditions can change rapidly after rain or snow. Check the weather and current road conditions before heading out.
