What is Newspaper Rock?

Newspaper Rock is not just a rock; it’s a sprawling canvas that captures the essence of ancient storytelling through its detailed petroglyphs. These rock carvings, created by Native American tribes, showcase a variety of symbols, animals, and figures that are believed to represent the cultural, spiritual, and daily life aspects of these early inhabitants.

Exploring the Petroglyphs of Newspaper Rock

As you approach Newspaper Rock, the sheer density and variety of the petroglyphs are immediately striking. Reading the petroglyphs offers insights into ancient Native American cultures. Take your time to truly appreciate its historical significance and artistic beauty.

Observe the details of each carving and consider the stories and messages they might hold. Look for animals like bighorn sheep, human figures, and motifs like handprints and spirals, which symbolize human presence and spiritual beings. Photography is encouraged, but remember to respect the site by not touching the petroglyphs, as oils from skin can damage the ancient rock art.
