Dead Horse Point State Park

History of Dead Horse Point State Park

Dead Horse Point State Park, with its striking landscapes and rich history, has long been a place of intrigue and legend. The park’s name originates from a grim tale involving cowboys in the late 19th century. According to the story, cowboys corralled wild mustangs on the narrow mesa top, which was naturally enclosed by sheer cliffs and a narrow neck of land. They would select the best horses and leave the rest behind. Unfortunately, some horses were left stranded without access to water, leading to the poignant name “Dead Horse Point.” Today, the park stands as a tribute to the resilience of nature and the storied past of the American West. It offers visitors a chance to explore not only its breathtaking views but also its historical significance. The park has been preserved to protect its unique geological features and to honor the history and legends that have shaped it.

Visitor Information 

• Entrance Fee: Admission to the park requires a fee supporting maintenance and conservation efforts. Entry is included for Utah State Park Day-Use Annual Passholders. 
• Hours: The park is open year-round from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Check the official website for current conditions and closings.
• Facilities: Visitors will find restrooms, picnic areas, a gift shop, and the Dark Horse Cafe, which offers breakfast and lunch from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, just outside the visitor center.

Dead Horse Point State Park Trails

The park offers about seven miles of hiking, 10 miles of biking, and pet-friendly trails that navigate Dead Horse Point State Park’s rimrock and desert plateau landscape, connecting eight different overlooks. All hiking trails are relatively easy, traversing the mesa top with minimal elevation gain or loss.

Dead Horse Point State Park trails offer something for every level of hiker, from easy, scenic walks to more challenging hikes. 

• Dead Horse Point Overlook Trail: This easy 200-foot one-way trail leads to the park’s main attraction. It’s wheelchair accessible and offers some of the most iconic views of the Colorado River and canyons some 2,000 feet below. There’s a parking area at Dead Horse Point Overlook.  
• West Rim Loop Trail: For those seeking a longer hike, the West Rim Loop offers a moderate five-mile trek along the canyon’s rim, providing spectacular views and a peaceful experience away from the crowds. 
• East Rim Trail: This 2.5-mile one-way trail offers varied difficulty levels and leads hikers to several breathtaking viewpoints over Dead Horse Canyon, including views of the La Sal Mountains.
