Guide to Exploring Upheaval Dome in Canyonlands

Nestled in the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park, Upheaval Dome is one of Utah’s most fascinating geological wonders. Visible even from space, this massive crater stands out among the mesas and canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Its unique structure and mysterious origins make it a must-see for curious visitors, adventurers, and geology lovers. Here’s your guide to exploring Upheaval Dome and making the most of your time in Moab.

The Mystery of Upheaval Dome

Upheaval Dome stretches three miles across, with its rim towering over 1,000 feet above the crater floor. At its center lies a dome-like peak, where rock layers were pushed upward (anticline) and surrounded by downward-sloping layers (syncline). Scientists have long debated its origins—was it a collapsed volcano or the result of a meteorite impact 60 million years ago? Its striking formations continue to inspire wonder and mystery.

How to Explore Upheaval Dome

To get there, head to the Island in the Sky entrance of Canyonlands National Park and follow the signs. Upheaval Dome is about a 30-minute drive from the park entrance. Whether you’re up for a short hike or an all-day adventure, there are plenty of ways to experience this natural marvel.

Hiking Upheaval Dome

There are three great hiking options for exploring Upheaval Dome. The first is a short hike to a scenic overlook of the crater. The second leads to a higher viewpoint with a slightly longer trail. For a more challenging adventure, hike around the entire crater. Consider booking a guided hike or joining a ranger-led program to learn more about the park’s fascinating past.

Upheaval Dome Overlooks Trail

Distance: 0.8 miles (first overlook) or 1.8 miles round trip (second overlook) | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

This short (but steep) family-friendly trail is a must for the best views of Upheaval Dome. A 0.3-mile trek leads to the first overlook, which offers an excellent vantage point of the crater. Continue another 0.5 miles along the rim to the second overlook for a more expansive perspective.

Crater View Trail

Distance: 1.3 miles out-and-back | Difficulty: Moderate

This moderately challenging trail offers a closer view of the crater’s core. While family-friendly, it includes rock scrambling and slickrock navigation sections, making it an exciting option for adventurous hikers and older kids. Be prepared to share the trail with other explorers, as it’s popular for hiking and trail running.

Syncline Loop Trail

Distance: 8.1 miles round trip | Difficulty: Strenuous

For seasoned hikers, the Syncline Loop Trail offers a challenging journey that circles the entire dome. The trail features steep switchbacks, boulder fields, and a 1,500-foot elevation change, making it a true test of endurance. While it doesn’t provide direct views of Upheaval Dome, it offers an immersive experience through the rugged canyons surrounding the crater.

Pro tips: Hike clockwise to enjoy better afternoon shade, bring at least one gallon of water per person, and wear sturdy footwear to safely navigate loose sand and rocky terrain.

Getting to the Trailheads

From the Island in the Sky Visitor Center, drive 6.5 miles south and turn right onto Upheaval Dome Road. Continue for 4.8 miles to the picnic area at the end of the road. All the trails—each clearly marked with signage—begin from this convenient starting point.
