Newspaper Rock FAQ
The petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock are estimated to be between 700 and 2,000 years old. They were created by several Indigenous cultures over centuries.
It’s named “Newspaper Rock” because the many carvings resemble a collection of stories or messages, much like a newspaper. Each petroglyph represents a piece of ancient communication.
No, touching petroglyphs is prohibited as oils from skin can damage the rock surface. Visitors are asked to admire the carvings from a short distance.
