Faux Falls

Guide to Hiking Faux Falls

If you’re looking for a fun and rewarding hike just south of Moab, Faux Falls is an excellent choice. This short but scenic trek takes you gently uphill from Ken’s Lake to a beautiful waterfall flowing early in the year, typically during the spring. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or just looking for a picturesque spot to relax away from the crowds, Faux Falls is a must-visit. Here’s everything you need to know about hiking Faux Falls and exploring the surrounding area.

About Faux Falls

Just steps from Ken’s Lake in Spanish Valley, Utah, Faux Falls is a hidden gem for most Moab visitors. The falls are actually man-made—hence the name “Faux Falls.” Water is diverted from Mill Creek to Ken’s Lake, creating a stunning cascade down the rugged red rock. The falls begin flowing in the spring when water is released to fill Ken’s Lake. This is the best time to visit, as the cascade is at its fullest, and the surrounding desert bursts with color from wildflowers and lush greenery. The pool at the base of the falls is shallow, around two to three feet deep, making it an ideal spot for families with kids or visitors with dogs to cool off and enjoy the refreshing water.

Hiking to Faux Falls

Three different routes lead to Faux Falls, each offering a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. At the trailhead, marked signs with arrows point in the direction of your chosen route. No matter which path you take, you’ll be treated to views of Ken’s Lake, the La Sal mountains, and access to Faux Falls, an unexpected desert oasis.

Lower Faux Falls Trail

Distance: 2.0 miles round trip | Difficulty: Easy

This is the most common route to Faux Falls and is a relatively easy hike with a mild elevation gain of about 200 feet. The trail begins with a gentle incline and follows a dirt path with scattered rocks. Early in the season, sections of the path may be slightly muddy from snowmelt, while later in the year, the desert sun bakes the terrain into a firm, sandy track. As you get closer to the falls, the sound of rushing water grows louder, and soon, you’ll be greeted by the refreshing mist and vibrant green foliage surrounding you.

Ken’s Lake and Faux Falls Loop

Distance: 3.4-mile loop | Difficulty: Easy

The Ken’s Lake and Faux Falls Loop is a great option for those looking for a longer hike. Generally considered easy, it takes just over an hour to complete without stops. The trail circles Ken’s Lake, providing 360-degree views of the shimmering water, surrounding cliffs, and the La Sals. As the path leads you toward Faux Falls, the terrain transitions to a slightly rockier section before reaching the cascading waters. This hike is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon when the sun casts golden hues over the lake and surrounding desert.

Upper Faux Falls

Distance: 2.5 miles round trip | Difficulty: Moderate

For a more secluded experience, take the Upper Faux Falls Trail, which continues past the base of the falls and ascends further up the rocky terrain. This trail is slightly more challenging, with a moderate elevation gain and sections that require light scrambling over slickrock. The reward is a breathtaking vantage point overlooking Ken’s Lake and the valley beyond, making it an ideal spot for those seeking solitude and a bit more challenge.

Getting to Faux Falls

Most navigation apps will direct you to Ken’s Lake, which is the best place to park. From the parking area, drive east toward the restrooms and find a parking spot on the south side of Ken’s Lake. Look for a wooden sign that simply reads “Trail.” Walk east through the campground, following the dirt path as it winds past campsites. After about a third of a mile, you’ll reach a trailhead board with a large map directly across from Campsite B. The route is well-marked and relatively easy to follow, though it does become rockier as you approach the waterfall. After about a mile, you’ll arrive at Faux Falls.
