There are few places on Earth where you feel more connected to the landscape than in Moab. Here, sandstone arches rise from canyons, the air hums with stillness, and every sunrise paints a new palette across the desert. Whether you’re chasing adventure in the national parks, solitude, or a renewed sense of presence, five days in Moab offers the perfect balance – enough time to explore deeply while still slowing down to savor it all.

When to Visit Moab

The desert transforms with the seasons, each offering a new way to experience its beauty. Spring brings wildflowers and ideal hiking weather, while summer delivers long sun-filled days and cool dips in the Colorado River. Autumn glows with golden cottonwoods and crisp air, and winter, the quietest season, offers solitude and snow-dusted mountain peaks. Some of the clearest night skies in the world can be witnessed year-round.

What to Do with 5 Days in Moab

Day 1: Arches National Park

Begin your adventure in Arches National Park, where over 2,000 natural stone arches defy gravity and time. Spend the morning along Arches Scenic Drive (36 miles round trip), stopping at The Windows, Balanced Rock, Landscape Arch, and Devil’s Garden – each revealing red rock formations unique to the American Southwest.

Pack a picnic and find a scenic pullout for lunch. Bring plenty of water and snacks (there are no restaurants in the park), and pack out what you pack in. ULUM Moab can prepare packed lunches for guests to make the most of park days.

As the day cools, make your way to Delicate Arch, Utah’s most iconic landmark. The 3-mile hike rewards you with a view that’s pure magic, especially at sunset when the arch glows like fire against the sky. On your drive back, pause at Park Avenue for one last look as the canyon shadows stretch across the desert floor, or stick around for stargazing inside the park.

Day 2: Fiery Furnace Hike or Downtown Moab

Return to Arches for something more adventurous: the Fiery Furnace. This labyrinth of fins and slot canyons is accessible only by ranger-led hike or permit. You’ll scramble, squeeze, and climb through rock formations while learning about geology and desert ecology.

Reservations open seven days in advance on Recreation.gov and fill up quickly. Hikes typically start around 9 a.m. and last 2.5 to 3 hours. Tickets should be picked up the day before or the morning of the hike.

If you prefer a slower pace, spend the day exploring and shopping in Downtown Moab. Browse local art galleries and boutiques, visit the Museum of Moab or Moab Giants to walk with dinosaurs, and enjoy lunch at a local cafe.

Cap the day with an evening stroll around Looking Glass Arch, a soak in hot and cool dipping pools, and a sunset cocktail back at ULUM Moab as the desert quiets into dusk.

Day 3: Canyonlands’ Island in the Sky District and Petroglyphs

Canyonlands National Park stretches across a vast expanse of mesas and buttes, where the Colorado and Green Rivers carve deep canyons into the sandstone, dividing the park into four distinct districts. Spend your third day exploring the Island in the Sky District, just 40 minutes from Moab.

Arrive early for sunrise at Mesa Arch, a stone arch that frames the canyon far below. The short 0.7-mile loop is one of the most spectacular hikes in Utah.

Continue to Grand View Point Overlook and Green River Overlook for sweeping vistas that stretch to the horizon.

In the afternoon, those with a 4×4 can drive Potash Road, which winds past dinosaur tracks, the turquoise Potash Evaporation Ponds, and Corona Arch. If you’re feeling brave, navigate the switchbacks of the Shafer Trail and stop at Thelma & Louise Point for one of the most cinematic views in the region. On your return, pause along Potash Road to see ancient petroglyphs etched into the rock – stories from another time.

Day 4: Dead Horse Point State Park or Canyonlands’ The Needles District

Just outside Canyonlands lies Dead Horse Point State Park, where the Colorado River loops 2,000 feet below. The Dead Horse Point Overlook rivals the Grand Canyon, making it a breathtaking place for sunrise or sunset photography. Stretch your legs by hiking the East or West Rim Trails for awe-inspiring vistas.

Alternatively, drive 45 minutes south of ULUM Moab to The Needles District of Canyonlands to discover a quieter, wilder side of the national park. Towering red-and-white spires rise like cathedral columns, and trails like Chesler Park Loop or Cave Spring immerse you in the desert landscape. This area also offers 50 miles of off-roading in challenging backcountry.

Day 5: Choose Your Moab Adventure

Your final day is about connection: to nature, and to the sense of wonder that brought you here. Feel the adrenaline on a Hell’s Revenge Hummer Tour, raft the Colorado River, or climb the dramatic Looking Glass Arch. Try canyoneering through hidden slot canyons, paddleboarding at Ken’s Lake, or kayaking calm sections of the Colorado River.

ULUM Moab’s Adventure Concierge can arrange curated adventures so you can simply enjoy the experience.
